Emergency Aid to the Republic of Indonesia for Flood and Landslide Disaster on Java Island

- The Government of Japan has decided to provide emergency assistance in kind (tents, blankets, portable water tanks, sleeping mats, and plastic sheets) worth about 13 million yen in total to the Government of the Republic of Indonesia, which sustained a large-scale flood and landslide disaster on Java island between January 1 (Sun) and 4 (Wed).
- Flooding and landslides caused by heavy rainfall in Jember in East Java Province on January 1 (Sun), and in Banjarnegara in Central Java Province on 4 (Wed), affected many people. With regard to the damage situation, it was reported that by the morning of January 5 (Thu.), 77 persons might be dead and 9,500 homeless in East Java Province, and 15 persons dead and about 300 people possibly still buried alive in Central Java Province.
- Affected by the series of disasters which have forced a large number of victims to take shelter to live in harsh conditions, the Government of Indonesia has requested emergency aid from the Government of Japan, while making its own efforts in search for the missing and in assistance to the afflicted.
- The Government of Japan has decided, in sympathy for the afflicted people, to extend this emergency aid from the viewpoint of humanitarian assistance for the victims, taking account of the friendly relations between Japan and the Republic of Indonesia.
