August 18, 2005

  1. On August 17 (Wed), the Agreement on Technical Cooperation between the Government of Japan and the Government of the Republic of El Salvador (Japan-El Salvador Technical Cooperation Agreement) was signed in Tokyo (the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan) by Mr. Nobutaka Machimura, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Japan, and Mr. Francsico Esteban Lainez Rivas, Minister of Foreign Relations of El Salvador.
  2. The Agreement sets forth comprehensive measures and other actions to be taken by El Salvador when accepting technical cooperation from Japan, such as dispatch of technical experts, senior overseas volunteers, survey missions for economic and social development to El Salvador and accepting trainees from El Salvador by Japan.
  3. This Agreement comprehensively sets up privileges, exemptions and benefits for Japanese personnel requested by the Government of the Republic of El Salvador. By concluding this Agreement, it is expected to further contribute to smooth implementation of Japan's technical cooperation in El Salvador and to the economic and social development of the country.
  4. The Agreement on Technical Cooperation with El Salvador is the 50th of its kind since Japan concluded a similar agreement with Brazil for the first time in 1970. The Republic of El Salvador is the seventeenth county including this kind of agreement with Japan out of thirty-three Latin American countries.
  5. In celebration of the 70th anniversary of the establishment of the diplomatic relations between Japan and five Latin American countries including El Salvador on 18 August 2005, a Japan-Central America Summit meeting will be held in Tokyo. It is expected that Japan and El Salvador will further develop their tradition of good bilateral relations through the timely signing of the Agreement on Technical Cooperation by the foreign ministers of the two countries.
