Nomination of a Candidate for the Next Secretary-General of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD)

  1. The Government of Japan has decided to nominate Dr. Sawako Takeuchi as a candidate for the next Secretary-General of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and will so notify the dean of the diplomatic corps on July 15.
  2. As a doctor of engineering and economics, Dr. Takeuchi is a researcher who specializes in investment engineering and urban development. She currently holds several positions including that of Adjunct Professor for the Management of Technology (MOT), Graduate School of Engineering, the University of Tokyo, and President and CEO of Urban Design 21 Co. LTD.
  3. The Government of Japan has decided to nominate Dr. Takeuchi after having considered from various aspects, in view of her personal achievements such as contributions as an academic, an economist, and in various government-related councils, her international experience, and also taking into account the further strengthening of relationship between Japan and the OECD and more broadly Japan's contribution to the international community.
  4. The process of selection of the Secretary-General will continue among the OECD member countries until December 2005. The Government of Japan intends to exert utmost efforts to have Dr. Takeuchi elected as the next Secretary-General.
