Statement by the Press Secretary/Director-General for Press and Public Relations, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, on the Completion of the Elections for the Autonomous Bougainville Government in Papua New Guinea
June 8, 2005
- The Government of Japan welcomes the announcement made on June 4 (Sat) by the International Observer Team dispatched for the elections for the Autonomous Bougainville Government held from May 20 (Fri) to 27 (Fri) that the elections were conducted competently and transparently and that they reflect the will of the people of Bougainville.
- Japan regards it extremely important for the future stability of Bougainville and PNG (Papua New Guinea) as a whole that the people of Bougainville will proceed with the peace process respecting the election results and under the framework of the new Autonomous Bougainville Government. Japan also strongly expects that the Autonomous Government, together with the Government of PNG, will exert efforts for its economic and social development and intends to continue extending as much support as possible for that purpose.
- Japan dispatched a total of three officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (rotating one official at a time) as part of the International Election Observer Team and provided the Bougainville Electoral Office with Grass-roots Human Security Grant Assistance (worth about nine million yen) to procure materials necessary to conduct elections such as communications equipment and ballot papers.
