The Situation in Uzbekistan (Meeting between Mr. Yuichi Kusumoto, Japanese Ambassador to Uzbekistan, and Mr. Ibrohim Mavlanov, Deputy Foreign Minister of Republic of Uzbekistan)

  1. On June 1, in light of the current situation in Uzbekistan Mr. Yuichi Kusumoto, Japanese Ambassador to Uzbekistan, made the following demarche to Mr. Ibrohim Mavlanov, Deputy Foreign Minister of Republic of Uzbekistan.
    • (1) Ambassador Kusumoto reiterated that Japan continues to closely observe the situation in Uzbekistan caused by the incident in Andizhan, and it cannot help feeling concern over the news of the indiscriminate shooting of defenseless citizens when the security forces suppressed the incident. He made a demarche on the importance of investigation to be carried out under the international framework to seek the truth of this incident in a transparent, objective and credible manner. Furthermore, Ambassador Kusumoto conveyed the message that Japan attaches importance to the peaceful settlement of the situation and securing stability of the region, and strongly hopes that Uzbekistan will further enhance its endeavors towards democratization, respect for human rights and transition to a market economy.
    • (2) In response to this, Deputy Foreign Minister Mr. Mavlanov stated that he would transmit the message from the Government of Japan to the leadership of the Government of Uzbekistan.
  2. To observe the situation in the region of Uzbekistan where the incident occurred, the Government of Japan dispatched on June 1 some staff members of the Japanese Embassy in Uzbekistan to the eastern area of Uzbekistan as a part of the OSCE (Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe) survey mission to monitor the situation in Uzbekistan.
