Statement by the Press Secretary/Director-General for Press and Public Relations, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, on the Agreement on the Immediate Cessation of Hostilities between the Government of the Republic of Burundi and the National Liberation Forces (FNL)

  1. Japan welcomes the joint declaration issued on May 15 in Dar-Es-Salaam, Tanzania, by President of the Republic of Burundi Domitien NDAYIZEYE and President of PALIPEHUTU-FNL Agathon RWASA that they had reached agreement, after consultation for ceasefire, on the immediate cessation of hostilities.
  2. Japan, attaching importance to the consolidation of peace in Africa, has steadily supported through the TICAD process the Great Lakes Region, which is suffering from conflict.
  3. Japan highly appreciates the mediation efforts of Tanzania's President Benjamin William MKAPA and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Jakaya Mrisho KIKWETE for peace in Burundi, and also strongly expects the early conclusion of a ceasefire agreement and the realization of peace in Burundi as a whole.
