Statement by the Press Secretary/Director-General for Press and Public Relations, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, on the Selection of the Next WTO Director-General

- Japan welcomes the selection on May 13 in Geneva of Mr. Pascal Lamy, former European Commissioner for Trade, as the next WTO Director-General. Mr. Lamy is expected to take up the post on September 1, following a decision on his appointment at the General Council on May 26 (Thu) and 27 (Fri).
- Japan has regarded Mr. Lamy most qualified for the post of the WTO Director-General, and expects that he will lead the WTO to further develop by strengthening the organization and administrating it in an effective and fair manner. Japan also considers that his renowned expertise and ability will be valuable to concluding the WTO Doha Development Agenda negotiations.
- Japan appreciates the efforts of those who facilitated the extremely smooth selection process of the Director-General including Ambassador Amina Chawahir Mohamed (Kenya), Chairperson of the General Council.
