Statement by the Press Secretary/Director-General for Press and Public Relations, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, on the Announcement by the National Independent Electoral Commission (CENI) of Burundi on the Election Timetable

- The Government of Japan welcomes the formal announcement by the National Independent Electoral Commission (CENI) of Burundi on April 23 on the forthcoming election timetable, following its confirmation made at the Great Lakes Regions Summit Meeting on Burundi held in Entebbe, Uganda, on the 22nd, and hopes that the election will be implemented in a peaceful manner in accordance with the schedule.
- Japan also welcomes the fact that at the consultations with the Tanzanian President Benjamin Mkapa on the 25th in Dodoma, Tanzania, the National Liberation Forces (FNL) leader Agathon Rwasa indicated his intention to halt hostilities against the Government of Burundi.
- Japan values the mediatory efforts made by the Ugandan President Yoweri Museven and President Mkapa for the peace process of Burundi and strongly hopes that the Government of Burundi and the FNL will soon resume talks for a ceasefire.
