Japan's Assistance for the Earthquake Disaster off the Coast of Sumatra
(Dispatch of the Second Japan Disaster Relief Medical Team)

- On April 6, the Government of Japan decided to dispatch the Second Japan Disaster Relief Medical Team comprising 17 members (including three doctors, four nurses and a pharmacist) to help victims of the earthquake disaster that took place before dawn on March 29 (Tue) (Japan time) off the coast of Sumatra, as the medical need in the disaster area remains high. The Second Team will leave Japan in stages for the area on the 7th.
- The earthquake that occurred off the coast of Sumatra, Indonesia, at around 01:10 on March 29 (23:10 on March 28, local time) has caused an immense disaster. According to the announcement by the Government authorities of Indonesia, the death toll, centering on Nias Island, has reached more than 500, and the areas of destroyed houses are widespread. There are also many injured patients, and as the medical need remains high, the Government of Japan has decided to dispatch the Second Team following the first dispatched on March 30.

Besides the dispatch of the above-mentioned medical teams, the Government of Japan has provided emergency relief supplies equivalent to approximately 15 million yen (tents, blankets, electricity generators and sleeping mats) to help the victims of this recent earthquake disaster.
