Statement by the Press Secretary/Director-General for Press and Public Relations, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, on the Dismissal of the Prime Minister and the Dissolution of the Council of Ministers in the Kingdom of Nepal

February 2, 2005

  1. The Government of Japan is carefully watching the volatile political situation in the Kingdom of Nepal in the wake of the recent dismissal of the prime minister and the dissolution of the Council of Ministers. The Government of Japan hopes that Nepal's political crisis will be solved as soon as possible.

  2. Japan also hopes that Nepal will recover its peace and stability as soon as possible on the basis of democracy and constitutional monarchy.

  3. If political leaders are being detained, the Government of Japan is deeply concerned about the situation and strongly urges that they be released and that the freedom guaranteed by the constitution restored promptly.

  4. Japan also urges the Maoists to achieve peace through dialogue.
