Signing of the Agreement on Technical Cooperation between the Government of Japan and the Government of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka

- On October 12 (Wed), the signing of the Agreement on Technical Cooperation between the Government of Japan and the Government of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka (Japan-Sri Lanka Technical Cooperation Agreement) took place in Colombo between Mr. Akio Suda, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka, and Dr P. B. Jyaasundera, Secretary, Ministry of Finance and Planning of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka.
- The Agreement sets forth basic measures and actions to be taken by the Government of the Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka on accepting Japan's technical cooperation, such as dispatching Experts, Senior Volunteers, Missions for Development Study to Sri Lanka, and providing technical training to Sri Lankan Nationals.
- The Agreement, compared to the previous arrangements which were agreed individually on project to project bases, stipulates comprehensively the privileges, exemptions and benefits given to the Japanese officials. It will further promote the smooth implementation of the Japan's technical cooperation and contributes greatly to the further economic and social development of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka.
- The Agreement is the 53rd of its kind signed since Japan concluded the first Agreement with Brazil in 1970.
