  3. This mission, to be dispatched on the basis of the Japan-ASEAN Plan of Action issued at the Japan-ASEAN Commemorative Summit held in December 2003, aims at researching assistance needs and investment possibilities in the subject areas in order for Japan to extend proactive cooperation from a viewpoint of narrowing intraregional gaps in the ASEAN region.

(*) BIMP is an acronym of Brunei Darussalam, Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines, and EAGA is that of the East ASEAN Growth Area. It was started in 1994 to jointly develop peripheral less-developed areas of the four countries. Together with the Mekong Region Development on the Indochina Peninsula, BIMP-EAGA constitutes a part of the effort to narrow gaps in the ASEAN region.
