Statement by the Press Secretary/Director-General for Press and Public Relations, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, on the Presidential Referendum of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela

- Japan expresses its respect for the democratic spirit of the people of Venezuela as the presidential referendum held on August 15 (Sun) was conducted in a democratic and peaceful manner.
- Japan has expressed its expectation that political impasse in Venezuela, which has had a long democratic tradition, would be resolved peacefully as early as possible in the form of respecting the constitution, democracy and human rights, from the standpoint that Japan is extending positive support to the stability and democratization of Latin American countries.
- Japan strongly expects that the whole Venezuelan nation will clarify the problems involved in the referendum, conquer political differences and realize true social stability through dialogue, based on the spirit of democracy and national reconciliation that are in the tradition of the country.
