Statement by the Press Secretary/Director-General for Press and Public Relations, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, on the Third African Union (AU) Summit

- The Government of Japan welcomes the success of the Third African Union (AU) Summit held from July 6 (Tue.) to 8 (Thu.) in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, in which African leaders confirmed their commitment to strengthening the security system in Africa centering on a newly established AU Peace and Security Council, and implementing the New Partnership for Africa's Development (NEPAD) program.
- Japan anticipates the AU will take further initiatives in promoting peace and prosperity in Africa under the leadership of the newly elected AU Chair, Nigeria.
- Japan intends to further develop cooperative relations with the AU and African countries to resolve issues in Africa that should be addressed collectively by the international community, while putting the Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD) process at the center of its policy.
- Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi sent a congratulatory message on the occasion of this Summit.
