Statement by the Press Secretary/Director-General for Press and Public Relations, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, on the National Assembly Election of the Republic of South Africa

- Japan highly values that the National Assembly Election of the Republic of South Africa was carried out in a free and fair manner without any major disruption on April 14 (Wed) as the third election since the country achieved democracy in 1994, the result of which was announced by the Independent Electoral Commission of the Republic of South Africa on April 17 (Sat) (Japan time 18 (Sun)).
- Japan welcomes the success of this election as showing that democracy has taken root in South Africa in the past decade.
- Japan expects that based on the success of the election, the Republic of South Africa will enjoy further stability and prosperity and play a more important role in the international community as a leader of not only Africa but all developing countries.
