Grassroots Human Security Grant Aid to Iraq
February 9, 2004
- On February 9 (Mon), the Government of Japan decided to extend a grassroots human security grant aid of $802,909 (about 85 million yen) in total to the Water Department of the Governorate of Al-Muthanna for the Project of Supplying Water Tankers to the Governorate of Al-Muthanna.
- The water supply system in Iraq, particularly in rural areas, remains unable to function fully because of both the looting after the ending of the major fighting and the unreliable supply of spare parts and other necessities, and the Governorate of Al-Muthanna is no exception. In order to overcome this situation, the Department of the Governorate of Al-Muthanna has requested the Government of Japan to provide funds necessary for the purchase of 12 water tankers.
- The Japanese Self Defense Forces (SDF) will take part in water purification activities in the near future. The 12 water tankers will be used to distribute purified water in the region.
- The project, which will assist the stabilization of the people's living conditions by securing a stable supply of clean water, will benefit directly and indirectly the residents of Samawah, the central city in the Governorate, and the surrounding areas.
