Emergency Aid to Sri Lanka for Torrential Rain Disaster
December 27, 2004
- On December 27, the Government of Japan decided to extend emergency assistance in kind, equivalent to about 15,500,000 yen, including tents, electric generators, sleeping mats and soap, to the Government of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka, which has sustained a large-scale disaster from torrential rains.
- From December 13 (Mon) through 18 (Sat), torrential rains hit Sri Lanka, mainly in the northern and eastern parts of the country, leaving 12 persons dead and about 23,000 households evacuated (as of December 23). At present, many afflicted people are being forced to lead difficult lives as evacuees in wide-ranging areas of the country. The Government of Sri Lanka has been making rehabilitation efforts on its own and has also called on the international community for emergency assistance.
- Japan has decided to extend this emergency assistance to Sri Lanka, from a humanitarian point of view for the afflicted and in light of the friendly relations between Japan and the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka.
