Statement by the Press Secretary/Director-General for Press and Public Relations, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, on the Presidential Election in Georgia

- On January 15 (Thu), Central Election Commission of Georgia announced the final results of the Presidential election in Georgia that took place on January 4 (Sun). Japan welcomes the election of Mr. Mikheil Saakashvili Nikolaevich as the President.
- The election observation mission organized by the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) and other organizations saw remarkable progress in this election compared to the Parliamentary election held in November last year, and three observers dispatched by the Government of Japan judged that the election was generally implemented in a free and fair manner.
- Japan expects that Georgia will make smooth progress and contribute to peace and prosperity in the Caucasus region under the leadership of the President-elect, Mr. Saakashvili, and intends to continue to support its reform efforts towards further democratization and the development of the market economy.
