Emergency Assistance for the Rehabilitation of the National Dispatch Centre of Iraq through the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP)
July 4, 2003
- On July 4 (Fri), the Government of Japan decided to extend emergency assistance totaling 5,554,998 dollars to UNDP to rehabilitate the National Dispatch Centre of Iraq and to provide it with necessary equipment and materials.
- The Centre is an important facility which controls the power supply in Iraq. After major fighting in Iraq came to an end, however, the Centre became the target of looting and burning, and the facilities are damaged and pieces of equipment have been removed. It is feared that unless the facilities are restored and equipment such as the Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition system is improved as quickly as possible, the overall functions of the Centre will deteriorate and will adversely affect the power supply to the whole country.
- This emergency assistance is part of Japan's Assistance Package for Iraq announced on May 21. Rehabilitation of the Centre will be urgently implemented as it will provide a proper and stable supply of power generated in Iraq and the stable operation of important facilities for humanitarian needs such as hospitals, water supply and sewage treatment facilities.
- This assistance is implemented as part of Japan's humanitarian assistance of up to 100 million dollars on Iraq announced on April 9.
