- The signing of the Agreement between Japan and the Republic of Uzbekistan for Air Services
took place in Tokyo (Ministry of Foreign Affairs) on December 22 (Mon) between Ms. Yoriko Kawaguchi, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, and Mr. Sodiq Solihovich Safaev, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Uzbekistan.
- Uzbekistan has the largest population (about 25 million) in Central Asia and is the hub of traffic, transportation and telecommunications in the region. It also has well-known tourist cities such as Samarkand, Khiwa and Bukhara. Since Uzbekistan became independent in 1991, the Government of Japan has been engaging in active diplomatic activities with this key country in Central Asia, including assistance for stable nation-building. As a result, personal exchanges between the two countries are expanding in various fields such as politics, economy and culture.
Since 1995, Uzbekistan has been expressing the hope of concluding a bilateral agreement for air services with Japan. In view of the friendly bilateral relations and prospects of sufficient demand for air services, the Government of Japan decided to begin consultations from July 2002. After basic agreement was reached on the draft text, the two sides have now signed the Agreement.
At present, a twice-a-week provisional air route connecting Tashkent, Tokyo and Osaka is provisionally in service. In summertime one more weekly-flight between Tashkent and Osaka is added.
- The aim of this Agreement is to establish and operate regular air services between Japan and Uzbekistan, and with this signing, it is expected that the stable operation of regular air services will be made possible, personal and economic interchanges further promoted and the friendly relations between the two countries strengthened.
- The Agreement is subject to approval by the two countries in accordance with their respective constitutional procedures and enters into force on the date of exchange of diplomatic notes indicating such approval.
