Assistance for Basic Education for Out of School Children in Tanzania

December 17, 2003

  1. On December 17 (Wed), the Government of Japan and the United Nations (UN) decided to extend assistance of a total of 711,263.41 US dollars through the Trust Fund for Human Security to the project "Basic Education and HIV/AIDS and Life Skills for Out of School Children in Tanzania" to be implemented by the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF).

  2. The purpose of this project is to procure student text books and reading materials on AIDS/HIV and hold workshops on community dialogue for HIV/AIDS through the Complementary Basic Education in Tanzania (COBET), a basic education programme that aims at providing life skills (nutrition, hygiene, HIV/AIDS prevention), literacy and vocational training opportunities to out-of-school children aged 8-18 in Tanzania where there is a high rate of AIDS and a low rate of school attendance among children.

  3. This project is expected to increase out-of-school children's opportunities for basic education and enhance the capacity of individuals in the communities to prevent HIV/AIDS.
