December 17, 2003
- On December 17 (Wed), the Government of Japan and the United Nations (UN) decided to extend assistance of a total of 711,263.41 US dollars through the Trust Fund for Human Security to the project "Basic Education and HIV/AIDS and Life Skills for Out of School Children in Tanzania" to be implemented by the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF).
- The purpose of this project is to procure student text books and reading materials on AIDS/HIV and hold workshops on community dialogue for HIV/AIDS through the Complementary Basic Education in Tanzania (COBET), a basic education programme that aims at providing life skills (nutrition, hygiene, HIV/AIDS prevention), literacy and vocational training opportunities to out-of-school children aged 8-18 in Tanzania where there is a high rate of AIDS and a low rate of school attendance among children.
- This project is expected to increase out-of-school children's opportunities for basic education and enhance the capacity of individuals in the communities to prevent HIV/AIDS.
