Setting Up of "Japan Pavilion" at the World Summit on Sustainable Development

August 16, 2002

  1. At the World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD/Johannesburg Summit) to be held in Johannesburg, South Africa, from August 26 to September 4, Japan will set up a "Japan Pavilion" at Ubuntu Village, the site of events to be held concurrently during the Summit, with the cooperation of the ministries and agencies concerned, including the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, government organizations, private companies, other groups, NGOs and international organizations.

  2. The Japan Pavilion will feature exhibitions and seminars. The exhibitions will be put on by the ministries and agencies concerned, private companies and NGOs. For the seminar part, such events as "Japan Day", seminars, panel discussions and briefings on wide-ranging themes including the environment, development, governance in Africa, and science and technology, will be held with the cooperation of various organizations.

  3. The setting up of the Japan Pavilion is expected to pave the way for the various organizations and agencies including the government, the private sector and NGOs to be united in publicizing their past achievements and future contributions, thereby attracting deeper interest and understanding from the international community toward the efforts of Japan as a whole for sustainable development.
To conduct such public relations activities more effectively, Japan also intends to set up a corner for Japanese exhibitions inside the international pavilion site, in addition to the Japan Pavilion.
