Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi Sends Letters to the Leaders of Egypt, Iran, Saudi Arabia and Qatar
September 20, 2001
- On September 19 Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi sent letters to Mr. Hosni Mubarak, President of Egypt; Mr. Mohammad Khatami, President of Iran; HRH Crown Prince Abdullah bin Abdul Aziz Al Saud of Saudi Arabia; and HH Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani, Emir of Qatar (Secretary General, Organization of Islamic Conference). The letter to each leader was sent, as part of Japan's diplomatic efforts, based on the belief that the international community must jointly express unbending opposition to terrorism in connection with the terrorist attacks that occurred in the United States.
- Prime Minister Koizumi expressed in his letters to these leaders of the Muslim world that he was encouraged by the fact that their countries strongly condemned the terrorist attacks. He also said that in order to prevent any recurrence of these acts of terrorism, the international community should stand together to denounce the terrorist attacks; that the attacks should not be associated with Islam itself; and that Japan will actively extend cooperation in this connection.
