Statement by the Press Secretary/Director-General for Press and Public Relations, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, on the Situation in Southern Serbia in Yugoslavia

- Japan welcomes the cease-fire agreement made by the Yugoslav side and the Albanian residents in southern Serbia (Federal Republic of Yugoslavia), and hopes that both sides will observe the agreement and that direct talks aiming at a peaceful resolution of the issue in the area will be started promptly.
- The Government of Japan also hopes that the redeployment of the Yugoslav army and Serbian police units in the Ground Safety Zone to be resumed soon will help stabilize the situation in the area including the northern part of the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia.
- Japan intends to continue to watch the situation carefully.
