Statement by the Minister for Foreign Affairs Ms. Makiko Tanaka Release of Political Detainees in Myanmar
October 9, 2001
Japanese
- We welcome the fact that since June the Government of the Union of Myanmar has been releasing political detainees including those elected as members of Parliament in the 1990 general election. We are delighted that the total number of the released detainees has reached a meaningful level.
- We value this positive development. Efforts at national reconciliation by both the Government of Myanmar and Daw Aung San Suu Kyi as well as the facilitative endeavors by the UN Secretary General's Special Envoy H.E. Mr. Razali Ismail have made possible this positive development.
- We consider it important that the Government of Myanmar will take steps to allow freedom of activities for political parties beginning with the National League for Democracy. Also, we urge political parties to maintain and strengthen mutual confidence with the Government.
- We continue to support fully the above-mentioned process in Myanmar, hoping that it will promote steady democratization of the country with its political stability maintained through the confidence-building efforts now in progress.
