Japan's Contribution to the Peace Process for Burundi
September 28, 2000
- The Government of Japan has decided to contribute 110,000 U.S. dollars to the Burundi Peace Negotiations Office of the Facilitator in Tanzania to support the peace process for Burundi.
- In Burundi, a peace agreement was signed in August in the absence of certain parties to the negotiations. Later on September 20, all the parties concerned signed a peace agreement, and they decided to continue negotiating a ceasefire and other remaining issues (Note).
- The Government of Japan has decided on a contribution to support the efforts of the United Nations to peacefully resolve the conflict and to promote peace in Burundi and friendly relations between Japan and Burundi.
(Note: The problem remains that not all the parties involved in the conflict are taking part in the negotiations.)
