Statement by the Press Secretary/Director-General for Press and Public Relations, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, on the Presidential and Parliamentary Elections in Mexico

July 3, 2000

  1. The Government of Japan highly appreciates the fact that the presidential and parliamentary elections were implemented in Mexico on July 2 in a democratic and peaceful manner with a high turnout.

  2. Japan congratulates the President-elect, Mr. Vicente Fox of the National Action Party (PAN), and hopes that the democratization and modernization policy line including liberal and open economic policy will be continued under the next administration.

  3. Japan also hopes that the traditional and friendly relations of cooperation which have been cultivated between Japan and Mexico will become even closer, and that Mexico plays an important role as a member of the Asia-Pacific Region.
