Emergency Assistance for Earthquake Disaster Relief in Indonesia
(Dispatch of a medical team of the Japan Disaster Relief Team as well as provision of emergency aid materials)

June 6, 2000

  1. On June 6 (Tue), the Government of Japan decided to dispatch a medical team of the Japan Disaster Relief Team (JDRT) to the Republic of Indonesia, which has seriously suffered from a recent earthquake. The team is to be dispatched for about two weeks, starting June 7. The team comprises 19 persons (including three from the already-dispatched fact-finding team) and carries medicines and medical equipment. It was also decided to extend to the Indonesian Government emergency material aid (tents, plastic sheets, carpentry kits, etc.) worth 14.99 million yen in total.

  2. At around 11:28 p.m. on June 4 (Japan time: around 1:28 a.m. on June 5), a major earthquake struck, about 100 km southwest of Bengkulu shore in the southern part of the island of Sumatra, with its seismic center located beneath the Indian Ocean. At least several hundred houses were destroyed. Such public facilities as Bengkulu hospital were also seriously stricken. As the result, relief activities and medical treatment of afflicted people are seriously hampered. The magnitude of the damage is expected to expand when the situation becomes clearer.
In these circumstances, the Government of Indonesia asked the Government of Japan on June 5 for the dispatch of a medical team and the provision of emergency material aid. Japan has already dispatched a fact-finding team of four persons to the site on June 5 to assess the need for emergency assistance.

  3. The schedule for the medical team is as follows:

June 7 (Wed) 10:55 Leave Narita by JL725
    16:05 Arrive Jakarta

Three persons from the fact-finding team (one staff member from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and two from JICA) will join the medical team at the site.
