Statement by the Press Secretary/Director-General for Press and Public Relations, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, on the Report of the Appellate Body of the WTO, Canada - Certain Measures Affecting the Automotive Industry

June 1, 2000

  1. On May 31, the Appellate Body of the World Trade Organization (WTO) released its report endorsing nearly all of the Panel's conclusion that Canada's measures concerning the import of automobiles (Autopact) were inconsistent with the WTO Agreement, and recommended that Canada bring its measures into conformity with the WTO agreement. Japan believes that the decision of the Appellate Body is appropriate and deserves a high credit.

  2. Japan hopes that Canada will carry out the recommendation in good faith.
