Statement by Prime Minister Yoshiro Mori on the Election of Governor George W. Bush as President of the United States of America

December 14, 2000

I would like to extend my heartfelt congratulations to Governor Bush on his victory in the presidential election of the United States.

As the Governor of the State of Texas, Mr. Bush has broad and rich experience in government administration. He will take office at the outset of the new millennium, and I am convinced that he will be a distinguished leader for the United States and for the world.

I intend to cooperate with President-elect Bush, based on the firm alliance between Japan and the United States, which share the common values of freedom, democracy and respect for basic human rights, in order to tackle together various issues facing the international community in the 21st century with a view to contributing to the peace and prosperity of the world.
