Statement by the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mr. Yohei Kono, on the Signing of a Comprehensive Peace Agreement on the Conflict between Ethiopia and Eritrea

December 13, 2000

  1. The State of Eritrea and the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia signed a comprehensive peace agreement on December 12 in Algiers. Japan, which has been urging both countries to settle the conflict, welcomes this comprehensive peace agreement. Japan also pays respect to the tenacious mediation efforts by Algeria and the U.S.

  2. Japan strongly hopes that the peace accord will steadily be implemented, thus the remaining issues including border demarcation will be settled, and that the two countries will work toward post-conflict reconstruction and the prevention of the recurrence of hostilities. Japan is determined to continue to extend its active support for their efforts.
