Statement by the Press Secretary/Director-General for Press and Public Relations, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, on the Parliamentary Elections in Côte d'Ivoire

December 8, 2000

  1. Japan is concerned that the domestic situation of the Republic of Côte d'Ivoire is deteriorating because of the decision by the Supreme Court to exclude Mr. Ouattara, leader of the Rally of Republicans, from standing as a candidate in the parliamentary elections to be held on December 10.

  2. The Government of Japan underlines the significance of fair and transparent elections participated in by all the political parties and as many people as possible, and strongly hopes that democratic reform and reconciliation among people will be steadily and rapidly implemented so that peace and stability will be advanced in Côte d'Ivoire.
