Comment by the Press Secretary/Director-General for Press and Public Relations, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, on the Appointment of Women and Minorities in the Consultative Council in Bahrain
October 11, 2000
On September 27, new members of the Consultative Council (Shura Council) in the State of Bahrain were appointed, including women and representatives of minority groups for the first time in history. These appointments expand opportunities for women and minority groups to take part in politics and contribute to further reflecting the opinions of a wide range of people in the country. The Government of Japan therefore appreciates such appointments as an important step in the reform process which H.H. Shaikh Hamad Bin Isa Al Khalifa has been promoting, and looks forward to further developments of the reform.
