October 6, 2000

  2. In Panama, torrential rain from September 24 triggered large-scale flooding in the provinces of Chiriqui and Veraguas, causing great human and material damage. According to the Government of Panama, two people are killed, 2,780 people afflicted, and a bridge partially destroyed. The Government of Panama has therefore requested emergency assistance from the international community including Japan, while conducting relief operations of its own.

  3. The Government of Japan has decided to extend this emergency assistance from a humanitarian standpoint, in view of the severity of this disaster and the friendly relations between Japan and Panama.
