Statement by the Press Secretary/Director-General for Press and Public Relations of the Foreign Ministry on the Dispute between Eritrea and Ethiopia

July 24, 1999

  1. Japan dispatched Mr. Kishichiro Amae, the Director-General of the Middle Eastern and African Affairs Bureau, to both Eritrea and Ethiopia from July 18. Mr. Amae has met with Mr. Isaias Afwerki, President of the State of Eritrea, and Mr. Meles Zenawi, Prime Minister of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, and confirmed that both Eritrea and Ethiopia have accepted the "Modalities for Implementation of the OAU Framework Agreement."

  2. Japan highly appreciates the acceptance of the OAU proposal by both countries and strongly hopes that they will start talks to achieve lasting peace between them. Japan will consider every possible way of support towards peace and reconstruction of the two countries.
