Assistance in kind for Direct Ballot in East Timor
June 22, 1999
- To support the work of the United Nations Mission in East Timor (UNAMET), the Government of Japan decided on June 22 (Tue.) to provide the United Nations with 2,000 radios as assistance in kind based on the International Peace Cooperation Law, regarding the direct ballot to be held in East Timor.
- The UNAMET, which has been making necessary preparations for the direct ballot to ascertain whether the people wish to accept the proposed autonomy or not, is now conducting a public information program. To make this program effective, the United Nations requested Japan to provide 2,000 radio sets. In response to this request, Japan has decided to provide the sets as assistance in kind based on the International Peace Cooperation Law.
- Japan has already decided to extend about 10 million US dollars to the U.N. Trust Fund and will continue to support UNAMET's activities in the future.
