Statement by Ministers for Foreign Affairs Masahiko Koumura on the Situation in Kosovo
(Completion of the withdrawal of Yugoslav military and police forces and the termination of NATO's air campaign)

June 21, 1999

  1. Japan welcomes NATO's decision to terminate its air campaign in response to the completion of the withdrawal of the Yugoslav military and police forces from Kosovo.

  2. A number of problems, however, remain to be tackled by the international community, including the reconstruction of Kosovo and the return of refugees to build a democratic society in which all ethnic groups can live peacefully on equal terms.

  3. The recent Group-of-Eight summit in Cologne came to a common recognition that G-8 countries would play important roles in the peace implementation in the future, and Japan will contribute to it as a member of the G-8.
