Statement by Foreign Minister Masahiko Koumura on the Extradition of Two Suspects in the Lockerbie Incident

April 6, 1999

  1. The Government of Japan sincerely welcomes U.N. Secretary-General Koffi Annan's report to the President of the U.N. Security Council that the two Lockerbie suspects arrived in the Netherlands on April 5 for trial. Upon receipt of the report, U.N. sanctions on Libya have been suspended. The Government of Japan highly appreciates the painstaking efforts by all the parties concerned for the resolution of the decade-long Lockerbie case.

  2. The Government of Japan expects that the suspected sanctions will be lifted completely as early as possible in accordance with the relevant U.N. Security Council resolutions.
