Statement by the Press Secretary/Director-General for Press and Public Relations, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, on Libya's Decision on the Two Lockerbie Suspects

On March 19th, Government of Libya conveyed its decision to the Secretary-General of the United Nations Kofi Annan to make available the two suspects for him to take custody of them, and the President of the Security Council, on March 23rd, issued a statement welcoming the decision. The Japanese Government welcomes the progress that has been made as a result of this decision and highly appreciates the patient efforts which all the parties concerned have made to achieve a breakthrough of the decade-long Lockerbie issue.
Japan hopes that the UN sanctions currently imposed on Libya will be lifted as soon as all the condition stipulated in UN Security Council Resosution 1192 are met.
