On the East Timor Issue
(Statement by the Press Secretary/Director-General for Press and Public Relations, Ministry of Foreign Affairs)

March 12, 1999

  1. Japan is pleased that as a result of a tripartite meeting held in New York among the United Nations, Indonesia and Portugal, there has been progress on the East Timor issue including an agreement on the means to consult the will of the East Timorese.

  2. Japan welcomes the efforts of each party concerned for a peaceful solution of this issue, and continues to watch the situation with close attention.
