On the Decision by the People's Consultative Assembly of Indonesia concerning East Timor
(Statement by the Press Secretary/Director-General for Press and Public Relations, Ministry of Foreign Affairs)

October 21, 1999

  1. On October 20, the People's Consultative Assembly of Indonesia adopted the decision to endorse the separation of East Timor from Indonesia. Japan welcomes this decision as it respects the result of the direct ballot reflecting the will of the East Timorese.

  2. Japan expects that all the parties concerned will respect this decision so that the process toward independence under the auspices of the U.N. will be implemented smoothly.

  3. Japan intends to continue to extend as much assistance as possible for resolving the East Timor issue.
