Statement of Foreign Minister Yohei Kono at the demise of His Excellency Dr. Julius Kambarage Nyerere, the former President of the United Republic of Tanzania

Upon learning the passing of His Excellency Dr. Julius Kambarage Nyerere, the former President of the United Republic of Tanzania, I should like to extend to the members of the bereaved family, the Government and people of Tanzania my sincerest sympathy and condolences, on behalf of the Government and people of Japan.
We highly appreciate the late Dr. Nyerere's great contribution not only to the unification of the people and development of Tanzania as the father of the Republic, but also to the stability of the region. The demise of Dr. Nyerere is a great loss to the world and Africa as a whole as well as to the Republic.
We sincerely hope that the soul of Dr. Nyerere will rest in peace, and that the Government and people of the Republic will overcome this sorrow and realize the ideals of the late Dr. Nyerere. The Government of Japan, on its part, will continue to cooperate for Tanzania's nation-building efforts.
