Japanese Contribution to the United Nations Trust Fund for the Multinational Force in East Timor

October 4, 1999

  1. On October 4, 1999, Foreign Minister Koumura announced the decision of the Government of Japan to contribute around 100 million US dollars to the United Nations trust fund for the multinational force in East Timor.

  2. Japan has already announced that it will provide a substantial financial contribution to the multinational force with an intention to contribute to developing countries' participation in the force. Japan expects this decision will help developing countries participating in the force and contribute to the smooth functioning of the force.

  3. Japan intends to continue to provide as much assistance as possible for the peaceful solution of the East Timor issue. In addition to this financial contribution of around 100 million US dollars to the United Nations trust fund, Japan will be active in the area of assistance for refugees and displaced persons as well as for reconstruction and development of East Timor in the mid- to long- term.
