Comment by Prime Minister Keizo Obuchi on the Results of the General Election for the Bundestag of the Federal Republic of Germany

September 28, 1998

1. I congratulate the Social Democratic Party led by Mr. Gerhard Schröder, its candidate for the Chancellorship, on its victory in yesterday's general election for the Bundestag, Germany's lower house of parliament.
      I am sure that negotiations for a coalition will be held and that a new government with Mr. Schröder as Chancellor will be established. Since Germany is an important partner of Japan, I will make every effort for the further development of Japanese-German relations in close cooperation with Mr. Schröder.
   
   
2. I pay sincere tribute to Chancellor Kohl, who has served in his post for a length 16 years since 1982, during which he has made such historic achievements as the unification of Germany and the promotion of European integration.
      I reiterate my gratitude for Chancellor Kohl's contribution to Japan-Germany relations, which have become very close during his tenure.
