Statement by the Press Secretary/Director-General for Press and Public Relations of the Foreign Ministry on the Peace Region Declaration by the MERCOSUR Countries, Bolivia and Chile
July 29, 1998
- The Government of Japan highly values the fact that on July 24, the Presidents of the MERCOSUR countries (Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, and Uruguay), and of Bolivia and Chile, signed a political declaration on a peace region at their summit meeting held in Ushuaia in Argentina.
- Japan heartily welcomes this declaration because it declares the MERCOSUR countries, Bolivia and Chile as a peace region free from weapons of mass destruction, aims at strengthening the mechanism of consultation and cooperation concerning security and national defense, promoting cooperation and implementation for confidence building, and making not only the region but also the whole of North and South America free from anti-personnel land mines, and intends to make U.N. information on the registration of conventional weapons more detailed and systematic.
