Emergency Aid to Papua New Guinea for Tsunami Disaster

- On July 23 (Thu.), the Government of Japan decided to extend to the Government of Papua New Guinea, which has sustained damage from a tsunami caused by an earthquake, emergency grant assistance of 300,000 dollars (35,400,000 yen), and emergency aid goods (such as tents, plastic sheets, carpenter's tools and medicines) equivalent to about 40 million yen through Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). The total amount of emergency assistance is about 75 million yen.
- The Government of Japan has decided to extend this emergency assistance from a humanitarian point of view, taking account of the scale of the disaster and the friendly relations between Japan and Papua New Guinea.
- Prior to this emergency assistance, the Government of Japan decided on the dispatch of a Japan Disaster Relief Team (JDR medical team). The team arrived at the site of disaster in the night of July 22 (Wed.), and immediately started its mission. The team is carrying medicines and medical equipment equivalent to about 35 million yen. That is in addition to the above-mentioned aid goods.
