Emergency Aid to Romania for Flood Disaster

July 1, 1998

  1. On July 1 (Wed.), the Government of Japan decided to extend an emergency aid consisting of medicines, generators, tents and other relief goods worth about 12 million yen, and also an emergency grant-in-aid of 50,000 U.S. dollars to the Government of Romania, which has sustained a serious flood disaster.

  2. From mid-May to mid-June, torrential rain hit the central, northwestern and northeastern parts of Romania, causing large-scale flooding and much human and material loss. According to the Government of Romania, there are 34 reported deaths, about 60,000 people afflicted, great damage to crops and livestock, and stoppages to transportation and telecommunications.
The Government of Romania has therefore started its own relief activities and requested emergency assistance from the international community including Japan.

  3. The Government of Japan has decided to extend this emergency assistance from a humanitarian point of view, taking account of the scale of the disaster and the friendly relations between Japan and Romania.
