Statement by the Press Secretary/Director-General for Press and Public Relations, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, on the Situation in Cambodia
(Current Situation in Cambodia and Japan's Basic Stance)
October 7, 1998
Japan is concerned about the present situation in Cambodia, where the dialogue between the ruling and opposition parties over the establishment of a new government has encountered difficulties since the general election held in July, and regrets that the National Assembly scheduled to be held today was postponed as cooperation could not be obtained from the opposition. Japan would continue to urge upon all Cambodian political leaders to fulfill the following points.
| (1) | Japan strongly hopes that all Cambodian political leaders will respect the will of the Cambodian people as expressed in the general election held in July, that the National Assembly will recover its function as soon as possible and that a new government will be established. |
| (2) | Japan strongly hopes that all Cambodian political leaders will cooperate among themselves under King Norodom Sihanouk, who is given "the august role of arbitrator" under the Cambodian Constitution, in order to achieve peace, stability and development in their country. |
| (3) | Japan urges all political leaders, in solving domestic political problems, never to resort to violence, abide by the law, and respect fundamental human rights such as the right to political activities, and the freedom of expression, as well as to secure the due process of law. |
