Reorganization of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs was reorganized as of August 1, 2004. This is a part of the Foreign Ministry's efforts to develop a proactive, as well as strategic, diplomacy, thereby ensuring the security and prosperity of Japan.
The main features of the restructuring include: a) the upgrading of the Consular and Migration Affairs Department to the Consular Affairs Bureau, which aims at improving consular services and enhancing safety measures for Japanese nationals abroad, b) the establishment of the Intelligence and Analysis Service to enhance intelligence gathering and analytical capacity, c) the establishment of the Disarmament, Non-proliferation and Science Department, with the aim of enforcing international security efforts including non-proliferation, and d) the establishment of a new position of Deputy Assistant Vice Minister (Crisis Management) will be established.
