April 1980 Joined Nissho Iwai Corporation
1984 Studied at the Federal University of Juiz de Fora, Brazil
1989 Seconded to Oita Prefectural Government (Worked at the sections of commerce and industry, local development and agricultural administration)
1991 Returned to the Department of Electric Power Project, Nissho Iwai Corporation
1995 New York Office of Nissho Iwai American Corporation, Director of Industrial Project Department (five and half years)
(Completed over 150 overseas business trips, the equivalent of 80 trips around the globe, during his tenure at Nissho Iwai)
March 2002 Decided to pursue a political career and resigned Nissho Iwai after 22 years of service
April 2003 Ran in the election for the Governor of Oita Prefecture
(Advocated election reform in the campaign, he contended the election with grass-root campaign. Although he lost by a narrow margin, this experience was the start of his political career.)
November 2003 Elected in the general election to the House of Representatives for the first time after a grass-root campaign without party affiliation (1st district, Oita Prefecture)
November 2004 Joined the DPJ
(To devote himself to a change of the ruling party)
September 2005 Elected for the second consecutive term as a member of the House of Representatives in the general election (Elected despite an adverse political climate against the DPJ)
2006 Assumed the DPJ representative of the Oita Prefectural Chapter
2009 Elected as a member of the House of Representatives in the general election (Third consecutive term)
Assumed the position of Parliamentary Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs in the Yukio Hatoyama cabinet that finally achieved a change of government.
2010 Reassumed the position of Parliamentary Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs (Kan Cabinet)
